Rajasthan Tour - Villages of
Rajasthan
The present State of Rajasthan was formed after a long process
of integration which began on March 17, 1948 and ended on
November 1, 1956. Before integration it was called Rajputana;
after integration it came to be known as Rajasthan. At present
there are 32 districts (including the new district of Karauli),
105 sub-divisions, 241 tehsils, 37889 inhabited villages and
222 towns in the State.
Once in the village, tourists realize that they have reached
a place that is most simple and has perhaps remained static
over last many years. A simple village has a group of people
living in circular thatched roof huts with walls made up of
plaster of clay, cow dung, and hay. The houses are bordered
by baras which are typically made up of the dry branches of
a nettle-like shrub.
Each village is a multi-community settlement
and here the various castes create a structure of dependence
based on the nature of their work.
The people of these villages belong to different communities
and are segregated according to the nature of their profession.
These people have deep religious faith that help them survive
in this immensely difficult landscape. Each house has a separate
corner reserved specially for worship.
There are also several places in the
villages, where people gather in a very large scale. These
are temples, shops, wells, and a village square which is usually
an old, leafy peepal tree with a large platform built around
it for people to sit on.
